At Yale, and little question at different locations, the message is bolstered in embarrassingly literal phrases. The bodily type of the university—its quads and residential schools, with their Gothic stone façades and wrought-iron portals—is constituted by the locked gate set into the encircling wall. Everyone carries round an ID card that determines which gates they can enter. The gate, in other words, is a sort of governing metaphor—because the social type of the university, as is true of each elite college, is constituted the same way.
