If Youre An Egalitarian, How Come You Educate At An Elite College?

Plato’s Gorgiasis still the best and most dramatic depiction of the rewards and risks of liberal schooling. The dialogue, considered one of Plato’s earliest, argues that the aim of training is to promote the free expression of one’s id. Attaining this freedom, nevertheless, requires a pupil to satisfy a harrowing demand. He should submit to studying his true nature via reasoning, or else be condemned to a life of captivity. For Plato, only a scholar who really understood himself — who learned his true rational nature, and hence might deliberate about and pursue his true good consciously — was protected towards self-enslavement.
