Research universities have a few of these personnel—professors of follow, analysis scientists, fellows. But not in abundance and not with all of the experience called for in Fourth Purpose efforts. Expanding that talent space will to some extent be internally resisted. When universities, already critiqued for an extreme administrative layer , add yet extra titles, requiring new appointment and retention standards, they invite extra criticism. The university tradition, outlined by faculty-controlled tenure criteria, is vulnerable to treating its Fourth Purpose skill-set as second-class and providing less safe positions.
