Different Graduation Robes Have Different Meanings

There are many meanings for graduation robes. They can be distinguished by colors, tassel styles, and hoods. Here are some standard definitions of different graduation robesgraduation cap gown tassel.

Doctoral robes

The material used to make doctoral robes can vary in weight and color, and they may be made of very light material, heavy materials, or a combination of both. While black is the most traditional color, some degree-granting institutions choose unusual colors for their robes. Doctoral robes are usually untrimmed and trimmed with three black velvet bars. They also typically have a hood.

Generally, doctoral robes are designed to be worn by those with the highest degrees in a particular discipline. While these gowns are the most formal, they are not identical to those worn by bachelors and masters. Some companies list doctoral robes as Ph.D. or EdD robes, but the two are different. For example, postgraduate robes are designed with three stripes on the arms, while the master’s gown has fewer.

Colors of hoods

The colors of graduation hoods will depend on the degree of the graduate. The hoods will be lined with the discipline’s hue, such as royal blue for the arts and sciences and light purple for finance and banking. The colors for engineering, medicine, and dentistry will be grey and gold. If you’re unsure what colors you should choose, consider the following tips for fitting the graduation hood.

First, choose a color for the hood trim. The trim should be light blue for those completing a Master of Science degree, whereas light blue for students completing a Ph.D. degree will signify that they’ve earned their Doctorate in education. Moreover, there should be no divided trim on a graduation hood. While it might seem challenging to determine which color trim goes with your degree, many institutions have simplified the process by categorizing degrees according to more extensive disciplines.

Colors of edging

Graduation robes have various colors depending on the discipline, college, and edging. Most hoods are black, but some universities require a specific color. The edging of doctoral hoods is usually a dark blue. The colors of hood edging vary according to the discipline, as well. For example, a doctor of philosophy degree may have a dark blue hood edging, while a Ph.D. in education may have a different color lining.

The hood and edging of graduation robes are made from black silk fabric with crimson velvet sleeves. It is trimmed with a gold button and tassel. A hood may also have a gold frog, which is appropriate for the degree. In the United States, a hooded gown is customary. It is often paired with a matching velvet trencher and a gold hood.

Styles of tassels

The styles of tassels on graduation robs are not uniform. However, some institutions have adopted uniform codes for academic attire. Tassels typically are nine inches long and attached to the cap button. In addition, depending on their degree, some graduates wear tassels that are the same color as their gown or the same color as their heart. While there is no official rule for the tassel placement, there are several common styles.

Tassels can be worn in two different ways. A simple style can be worn in the center and twisted at each end. Graduation robes often have tassels at the sides. If the tassels are long and dangling, they can be tied with a bow.
